Acrylic on damask
A Seat at the Table painting depicts the historic plenary hall in Bonn, where on May 23, 1949, the Parliamentary Council proclaimed the German Basic Law — the founding document of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The work is painted on damask fabric, a material long associated with domestic life and the family table. Up close, its woven floral pattern remains quietly visible beneath the paint — a second layer that reframes the image it carries. The private and the political share the same surface.
Among the Parliamentary Council's members were four women — Elisabeth Selbert, Friederike Nadig, Helene Weber, and Helene Wessel — who fought to ensure that gender equality was written into the constitution. Their presence at that table was not given; it was won.
The damask holds that history gently, while also opening further questions: the table of power remains inaccessible to many — and the seat that was won was never won for everyone.
