LONGING FOR BELONGING
2021
ca. 150x120x12cm, MDF, acrylic glass, digital print, 2021
The work Longing for Belonging examines the aesthetics of visually charged, restoratively nostalgic narratives on social media platforms such as Instagram and the reactionary tendencies associated with them, which often culminate in narratives and mechanisms of exclusion.
Using seemingly “apolitical” image subjects, themes such as home, homecoming and, in many cases, representations of women are ideologically charged in this context and linked to racist and sexist content.
The two photographs in the frames come from Instagram profiles that can be attributed to the New Right. The shape of the picture frames is based on the design of gaming computers, as the theme of returning home is also usually combined with the rejection of the foreign in the narratives of popular computer games.
